Multiple award-winning dancehall act and first Ghanaian artiste to win the prestigious Music of Black Origin (MOBO) award, Samini, has revealed the reason for composing his hit song ‘Gyae Shi’ over a decade ago.
Samini, known in real life as Emmanuel Andrew Samini, speaking in an exclusive interview with Abeiku Santana on his flagship programme ‘Atuu’ which airs on UTV, revealed a real life situation which led to the birth of the song.
When quizzed by the host on why he [Samini] composed his hit song ‘Gyae Shi’ which to wit meant ‘Stop Smoking’, the 2018 VGMA Reggae Song of the Year award winner disclosed that he composed the song when he was very young.
He added that he found ‘inspiration’ for the song after he curiously blended Indian hemp with locally distilled gin popularly known as Akpeteshie one hot afternoon and realized that Akpeteshie was better than ‘weed’.
“It’s a long story; I was very young at that time and I remember that very afternoon I blended the two and that was my experience,” he confessed.
The wide-ranging interview saw Samini share the story of his journey in the Ghanaian music industry and how he aided other artistes to become who they are today.
Samini is noted as one of Ghana’s top dancehall acts and is ranked with the likes of Stonebwoy and Shatta Wale.
Being the CEO of High Grade Music, Samini is noted for producing top quality stars. Among his crop of artistes are Kofi Kinaata and the recently introduced Deon Boakye who was given a shot to perform at the 2018 VGMAs.
